Isaac Newton University Lodge No. 859 (INUL) is a Lodge for matriculated members of the University of Cambridge and the fourth oldest in the Province. INUL is one of the founding Lodges of the Universities Scheme and a member of the Association of Medical, University and Legal Lodges. INUL was consecrated on 21 May 1861 at the Red Lion Hotel, Petty Cury in Cambridge. The Duke of St Albans was the Lodge’s first Worshipful Master. Other distinguished members of the Lodge include: HRH the Prince of Wales and later Kind Edward VII (1873); the Duke of Devonshire (1892); HRH the Duke of Connaught (1903); the Earl of Scarborough (1961); and HRH the Duke of York, later King George VI (1935).
The Lodge meets twice each academic term at Freemasons’ Hall, Bateman Street in Cambridge. The annual Installation meeting is the last Tuesday in October. The other meetings are held on the first Saturday of December, last Tuesday of January, first Saturday of March, last Saturday of April and second Tuesday of June.
As a university lodge, we know many of our members are not from Cambridge and may leave when their time at the University comes to an end. Therefore, not only do we try to provide new members with the best introduction to the Craft, but also we assist those moving away to find a lodge in their new location where they can continue their Freemasonry.
With a large membership, brethren attending meetings tend to consist of those still studying or working at the University along with alumni visiting from all around the world. This means our meetings and the dinners held afterwards are popular, with members from a broad range of subject areas and home countries able to mix in the manner of a college formal dinner.
In addition to our regular meetings, the Lodge holds an annual guest night and a summer garden party. These popular events are an opportunity to open-up to potential new members, partners of current members and members from other lodges in the city.
A candidate for membership would likely be a current or past member of the University of Cambridge, with ‘strict morals and upright intentions’ and belief in a Supreme Being.
